Michelle's story on losing her father to skin cancer and why regular skin checks are important.
Meet Michelle and hear out her story.Â
Are you getting regular skin checks? Hear how Michelle lost her father because a small black spot on his head that was overlooked developed and turned into skin cancer.
Michelle says “I lost my dad to skin cancer of June of last year, 2021. It started out with a small black spot on his head that he ignored for too long, and by the time he got in to check it, it had spread through the lymph nodes in his body. And I don't even think he made it a couple years after that. He just kept getting worse and worse, and they had to keep removing more and more spots..."
It's terrifying to know that minor changes in your body could lead to your death. When her father went in for checkups, the cancer had spread to his lymph nodes, and they had to remove more and more cancerous spots on his body.
It is important to have your skin examined on a regular basis. Never disregard changes in your body, no matter how minor or seemingly insignificant they appear. Ignorance is never blissful. Always have things checked out before it's too late.
According to the U.S Department of Health and Human Services, the most common cause of skin cancer in the United States is the prolonged exposure to Ultraviolet (UV) rays.Â
Michelle is generous enough to share her dad's story in order to help people realize the need of sun protection and regular skin checks. She is helping Outdoors Tribe raise awareness on this critical subject.
Now, you know why Michelle is determined to take care of her skin, and why Outdoors Tribe wants to increase awareness on this matter.
Michelle says " I am very particular in wearing hats or caps all the time. I wear sunscreen. I wear long sleeve shirts or short sleeve shirts with sunscreen on my lower arms." This is exactly what the Outdoors Tribe community stands for, to remind you & your family to make sun protection part of your lifestyle.
We appreciate Michelle sharing her story to help us educate on the importance of sun protection.
Michelle had to watch her mother suffer from skin cancer in addition to losing her father to the cancer. Take Michelle's father's experience as a lesson, and make sure any changes to your body do not spread to the point that you are unable to treat them. Pay attention to any changes in your body, no matter how minor.
Take sun protection seriously, wear enough sunscreen, sun hats, and long-sleeved sun protective clothing when out in the sun. Sunscreen should be re-applied every 2 hours in addition to a sun hat and sun protective clothing. It is important to follow best sun protection practices.
"Watch for spots on your body. Don't lose someone because you or they missed the opportunity to catch it." - Michelle
